At the same time, top international coaches conduct training sessions for up-and-coming prospects who have aspirations of one day playing professionally. The success or failure of this project (and I’m pretty sure it’s going to be successful) depends on the ability of all the participants to work together as a team. This week we had discussions about how things went in 2015, and the overall consensus was that the teamwork was pretty good.

The first BWB camp was held in India in 2001, and since then BWB has reached over 27,000 participants from 134 countries and territories. Our management team relies on the advice of a number of organizations including the U.S. State Department, the World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control, the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board, as well as an international safety and security organization. If conditions exist that may hinder our ability to provide a safe program, we will alter the itinerary and redirect the program to safer regions or provide other alternatives. Historically sports have played a pivotal role in breaking down cultural barriers and transforming societies worldwide.

I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing people from all over the world and learn about different cultures. I have also been able to improve my basketball skills by working with some of the best players and coaches in the world. Basketball Without Borders (BWB) is a global basketball initiative that brings together the top Young Basketball talent from around the world to promote the game of basketball education, and social change. In addition to on-court instruction, campers also participate in workshops on healthy living, leadership and character development. These themes are reinforced throughout the weeklong camp experience, which also includes competitions, community service projects and cultural exchange activities. In addition to its work with young people, Basketball Without Borders also supports the development of local basketball leagues and facilities around the world.

Our Sports Without Borders program unites sports enthusiasts from different cultures in order to promote team work, encourage athletic achievement, and inspire cross-cultural learning. The Institute facilitates more than 80 Web development short- and long-term study abroad programs in 30 countries for students, faculty and staff. It also hosts a variety of global learning events throughout the year to encourage a more globally engaged Kalamazoo.

To promote friendship and diversity, the campers are divided into teams without regard to race and nationality. Through its global network of BWB camps, the NBA strives to create positive change in the lives of young people by teaching them not only the fundamentals of basketball but also important life skills such as leadership, communication, and teamwork. Since its inception, BWB has reached more than 3,000 participants from over 130 countries and territories through camps and clinics. Basketball Without Borders (BWB) is a global basketball initiative organized by the NBA and FIBA.

But the NBA’s efforts don’t start and stop with Basketball Without Borders. The reception for basketball on the African continent was encouraging, and in 2010 the NBA opened its first African league offices in Johannesburg, South Africa. In August, a group of NBA stars that included Eric Bledsoe of the Phoenix Suns took part in a Basketball Without Borders camp in Angola, the league’s 14th such camp in Africa.
